Session - Homeschooling vs. Traditional Schooling for Struggling Students
Not all great minds learn alike. School shouldn't look the same for everyone. There is more than one way to learn, however traditional school expects everyone to fit into one small box. If your child learns differently and doesn't fit into traditional school's one size fits all box, you don't want to miss this presentation.

Session - Understanding Your Child’s Learning Style
Explore the various learning styles and how they really affect your child’s ability to master subject matter. We will investigate the five essential aspects of learning styles including dispositions, talents, modalities, interests, and environments.
Based on the research and teachings of the Learning Success Institute of Ventura, CA and the book “How to Determine Your Child’s Learning Style” by Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Hodson, this workshop will give you tools to enhance both learning and retention for all your children.
We will discuss how your learning style will determine your teaching style and how to make the required changes that will match your teaching style to your child’s learning style.
With this deeper understanding of your child’s unique learning style, you can have a more successful teaching experience, a closer tie with your children and save hundreds of dollars on wrong curriculum choices.

Session - Game Curriculum
Play enhances learning to an astonishing degree. The late Dr. Karyn Purvis, Director of Texas Christian University’s Child Development Center stated, “Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain – unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions!”      The Game Curriculum is a guide to using games and activities to stimulate and enhance learning at any age.  Come learn how you can make games the core of your curriculum in the early years and a big part of your learning activities even in the high school years.  The key is picking the right games for your children.  This session will give you guidelines and encouragement.

Session - Can You Learn Play & be Enrolled in a Charter?
A session specifically supporting those enrolled in charter schools to show them how they can take the fun learning they are doing and provide evidence of that. I would love to highlight how a 5-hour outdoor nature class can count for every subject. I like to think outside of the box and I believe that many parents need support on BELIEVING that learning through play IS learning and can COUNT for learning through a charter school if they use the right tools and formats. I would like to give parents the lingo they need to produce work samples (evidence) that accurately reflect the learning that their children are doing ALL the time. I am also very open to other topics and ideas. Being both a homeschooler of 2 kids (teens! high schoolers!) I am also passionate about the heart of homeschooling and how relationships between parents and siblings are at the forefront of successful homeschooling adventures together.

Session - When Life Interrupts Homeschooling
I was a mother of 7 ages 11,9,7,5,4,2, and a newborn when I was paralyzed from the waist down during the birth of our youngest child in November 2004. At that time, I had been homeschooling for over 5 years with I was very active both locally and in the greater South West speaking, writing and leading local homeschool groups. When I arrived home in a wheelchair facing months of surgery and rehabilitation, everyone told me to "just put the kids in school, it will be SO much easier on you." Even my own husband questioned our ability to school effectively anymore.   I had lost my legs, I was not going to lose my dream of schooling my children at home, what followed that day was 14 years of trial and error, out of the box thinking and a lot of hope and faith that I could do it. We not only found a way to school, but we also found a way to thrive and have fun during the worst years and months of our families lives. We even found a way to make sense out of what happened to our lives.  It is possible to homeschool through "Life" when it happens. Come find out what worked and what didn't work that well. Learn about things like Lego Day, movie day, story writing day, meal planning, budgets, hospital schooling and much more!

Session - Playing School: Bridging Play and Education for Preschoolers & Kindergartners with High Academic Needs
When parents ask for advice about homeschooling preschool and kindergarten the response is mostly “just let them play.” This is often sound advice meant to calm nervous new homeschoolers, combat the “Am I doing enough?” mindset, and help parents understand what is developmentally appropriate in early education. But what do you do when just playing isn’t enough for your child with high academic needs? In this session we will talk about the importance of various types of play and creating a developmentally appropriate child-led academic experience for our young learners.

Session - Delayed Academics
Most people assume that our schools employ the latest and best research.  Parents worry about their children “falling behind” and being ruined for life.  This is complicated by the introduction of Common Core and the belief that Pre-School is mandatory for life success.  Actually, all the replicable research shows that we are pushing our children into formal lessons way too soon, with disastrous consequences.  Homeschoolers needn’t fall into that trap.  Learn how Dr. Moore guided parents to allow their children to grow at a more natural pace and develop a love of learning.

Session - Unschooling Basics
Everything that goes on around a child, everything they hear, see, touch, smell, and taste, results in learning of some kind. If it isn't thwarted, children will naturally continue to learn the same way a small child has a drive to learn to walk or talk. Instead of formally schooling their children, unschooling parents protect their natural drive to learn primarily by supporting their interests and offering as much of the world to them as they can. Why? How? What does this look like in practice? Does it really work?

Session - How to Homeschool Kids Who (may have) Special Needs
Does your homeschooled child have any of the following?
  • Trouble learning the basics?  (reading, writing, and/or math)
  • Have a hard time sitting still for learning?
  • Struggle with other skills like organization, making friends, behavior, sensory issues, and more?
As homeschooled parents, we may think:
  • They will grow out of that…
  • It’s not that big of a deal…
  • It’s OK I’m Unschooling…
  • Sure, they’re a little quirky, but…
This session will help give parents an idea of how to handle some of these challenges.
You will also learn what we can do ourselves, when we need to enlist help – and how to get help if needed for all types of homeschooling.   You will also learn:
  • When your child will “grow out of that” –& when they will not
  • How to determine what your child’s needs really are
  • Options and  Resources for more help
Pam will review various case studies, and take your questions.
Walk away feeling empowered to help your child in yet another aspect of homeschooling!!

During the times of King Arthur, the story of an adventurous brave girl, named Kayley, whose father, a Knight of the Round Table, is killed by Sir Ruber, a maniacal brute who steals Excalibur and ultimately threatens to seize King Arthur's Camelot. Kayley enlists the blind, reclusive knight-aspirant Garrett and a goofy two headed dragon to brave the Enchanted Forest and retrieve the magic sword. Their adventure is also, of course, fraught with danger.

Session - Tips & Tools to Connect with Teens
Practical ways to communicate with teens enabling them to develop and participate in effective solutions leading to critical thinking skills, problem solving and leadership. The results will harvest deeper family connections as parents develop and enable their teens to make more confident decisions as parents “stop and listen” and “start asking questions” instead of “telling their teens what to do.” I want to give parents practical tips that they can try with their teens at home.

We will determine what our top values are, and how they shape our decisions, relationships, from big picture to little details. We will explore how to overcome fear or annoyance when our family members don't share our values, how our values play into daily life logistics and decisions that impact homeschooling and our relationships with our kids.

As more and more children are diagnosed with a “special needs” label we are finding that homeschooling can be a very effective educational option for them.  Homeschooling a child with special needs can be a joyful adventure, celebrating accomplishments and finding new ways to learn.  The key is in pinpointing specific needs and finding the right techniques and therapies to help your child grow and develop without pressure and stress.  Creative approaches to homeschooling special needs children can provide your child a whole new approach to life.

Session - The Science of Motivation
Even for adults, consistent and strong motivation is not easy to come by. As parents, motivating our children is even harder. But consider for a moment if you have ever been trained in motivation, or learned the cognitive science and psychology behind it. If not, this presentation is for you. You see, most of us have only seen examples of motivation in our upbringing, our workplaces, and in our education that worked in the short term but did not last; or even worse, had long-lasting adverse effects. In this workshop, Adam Hailstone will share with you how to nurture deep intrinsic motivation in yourself and your children so that you and they can achieve your highest potential.

Session - Can Play Change the World?
What is Play? Why do we do it? Is it frivolous or important? Is the opposite of play really work? or could it be depression? Is play only for kids? How can we promote more playful lives? Should we? Yikes! If you are interested in what research has to say about the benefits of play, or have never really given the topic of play much thought, this session is for you. Let’s talk about how play can enrich your homeschooling experience, your view of life and yes, maybe even change the world!

The Graduation Ceremony is open to all CHN Members - it is not necessary to be registered for the Expo and no check-in is necessary until space is filled.

The California Homeschool Network has been hosting a high school graduation ceremony at the annual CHN Family Expo for many years. It’s always a highlight of the conference. Why? Because it is a unique celebration of a moment in time when these homeschoolers lives are about to change.

As homeschool parents, we are so fortunate to be sharing an incredible journey together with our children. Walking hand in hand on our own unique path that we created together. The graduation ceremony marks the moment when we come to a fork in the road on that path and we must let go of our child’s hand and allow them to choose which path to walk without us. While we will always be there to love and support them, the graduation marks a moment of infinite change in their lives as they move forward into adulthood. Join us for this very moving ceremony and be sure to bring your hanky!
